Unexpectedly, Bitcoin Users in Indonesia Reach 200 Thousand
Bitcoin technology based payment tools have been used by at least 200 thousand users in Indonesia.
Even so, Bitcoin Indonesia CEO Oscar Darmawan rate, this figure is still too small when compared with the population in Indonesia which is now more than 250 million inhabitants.
"Bitcoin users in Indonesia are still small compared to the total population of Indonesia, in comparison only one in 1,000 Indonesians are using Bitcoin," Oscar said when met by Tekno Liputan6.com at the 2016 Data For Life conference in Jakarta, not long ago.
Oscar said, Bitcoin already existed in Indonesia since 3 years ago. Its emergence in Indonesia is expected to target those unattainable by banking services (unbankable).
"We are targeting unbankable people, so they can not access the bank not because they can not afford it, but they have money and want to buy online, so they want to use technology to help their business," Oscar said.
According to him, currently the use of Bitcoin in Indonesia mostly in Java Island with a concentration of 20 percent in West Java. Next is East Java, Central Java, Bali, Jakarta, Kalimantan, and Sumatra.
Bitcoin itself in Indonesia is most widely used in the tourism sector.
Other sectors that use Bitcoin are small and medium enterprises and games as part of the creative industry.
Oscar said, the turnover of Bitcoin money in Indonesia per day between Rp 3-5 billion. Although impressed high, he thinks that number is still much smaller than in the turnover of Bitcoin money in China which currently reaches Rp 50 billion.
According to Oscar, Bitcoin users are people who like to speculate. "So most do not buy to be used, but buy if there is a price to go on sale, because Bitcoin price goes down, last year, one Bitcoin worth Rp 3.5 million, this year Rp 7.5 million, so the price is high because of the speculation," he said.
Oscar also encourages the use of Bitcoin in Indonesia. He targets, 2 years again Bitcoin users in Indonesia can reach 500 thousand users.
Because, Bitcoin felt able to facilitate transactions and prevent money laundering. This, Oscar said, because all transactions paid with Bitcoin recorded data.
"So far, people who have committed crimes with Bitcoin are almost caught, because there are all traceable digital tracks, while cash transactions are usually difficult to trace," he said.
